Squat Mac – A Rare Melmac Penis Envy Psilocybe cubensis
Squat Mac is a Melmac Penis Envy expression defined by its unmistakable form. Thick, squat fruits with exaggerated proportions give this phenotype a presence that immediately sets it apart within the Cubensis lineage. The morphology is difficult to achieve and even harder to stabilize, making Squat Mac a standout among Melmac variants.
The caps present a rich golden coloration, often contrasting sharply with soda-can–thick stipes marked by heavy striations. Tissue density is extreme, solid throughout, with virtually no hollowness—giving the fruits a compact, weighty structure rarely seen at this scale.
Lineage History and Phenotypic Behavior

This genetic expression traces back to a Melmac isolation project initiated by TKK, with Squat Mac emerging as the first observed phenotype. Melmac genetics are known for long-term stability, having passed through decades of selective isolation from early Homestead Penis Envy material to modern Melmac lines. That consistency has preserved core traits while limiting excessive phenotypic drift, making Squat Mac a particularly striking example of form over variation.
Squat Mac was initially observed on high-manure substrates and has since demonstrated consistent performance across a range of substrates. Throughout 2022, Bas focused on further isolating, refining, and stabilizing this expression to preserve its defining characteristics.
Spore behavior in Squat Mac is unusual. Spores are distinctly purple in deposit, though active discharge is infrequent. In most cases, swab collection is necessary, with occasional natural discharge observed under specific conditions. This adds another layer of intrigue for collectors and researchers studying Melmac-derived genetics.
For the first time, Spore Co-Op offers a limited Squat Mac spore print. Availability is extremely restricted, providing a rare opportunity to access and study this highly distinctive Melmac lineage.
