Description
Strain origin: Ps. Zapotecorum “El Volcan”
Psilocybe zapotecorum is a rare species of psychoactive mushroom native to Mexico and parts of Central America, where it grows in humid, mossy areas, typically near decaying wood in subtropical forests. This species holds a long-standing cultural significance, especially among the indigenous Zapotec people of Oaxaca, who have used it in traditional ceremonies for its psychoactive properties. Its name, in fact, is derived from the Zapotec people, highlighting the mushroom’s ethnomycological importance.
P. zapotecorum features a range of colors throughout its lifecycle, often appearing light beige to dark brown, sometimes with an olive or greenish tint in immature specimens. It has a distinct, large, conical cap that flattens with maturity and displays a wavy edge, with gills that change from white to dark purple-brown as they mature and produce spores. Its stipe (stem) can be long and slender, often becoming gelatinous or slimy in high humidity.
This species contains psilocybin and psilocin, the primary psychoactive compounds that can alter perception, thought patterns, and mood. Like other psilocybin mushrooms, P. zapotecorum is known for producing mystical or spiritual experiences, often described as connecting users with nature and self. These qualities have reinforced its ceremonial use by the Zapotec and other indigenous groups, who believe it aids in spiritual healing and communication with the divine.
P. zapotecorum grows naturally in areas with rich, moist soil and ample organic matter, especially in regions with high rainfall.
In recent years, P. zapotecorum has attracted attention from researchers interested in its potential therapeutic uses and ethnobotanical significance, though its growth requirements mean it’s less commonly studied outside of its native environment.
- Gill formation – Gills typically are medium to large, wide range of formation. Likely to have available gills for spore production. Spores do discharge.
- Microscopy features Purple spores. Spore measure 7 x 12 micrometers. This variety does typically discharge plenty spores. Microscopes and magnification equipment are recommended for viewing microscopic features.
- Rare varieties of Psilocybe Cubensis will be retired in the Genetic Vault. Check out the Vault for more unique collectable varieties!
