Psilocybe zapotecorum is a rare species of psychoactive mushroom native to Mexico and parts of Central America, where it occurs naturally in humid, mossy areas, typically near decaying wood in subtropical forests. This species holds a long-standing cultural significance, especially among the indigenous Zapotec people of Oaxaca, highlighting the mushroom’s ethnomycological importance.

P. zapotecorum features a range of colors throughout its lifecycle, often appearing light beige to dark brown, sometimes with an olive or greenish tint in immature specimens. It has a distinct, large, conical cap that flattens with maturity and displays a wavy edge, with gills that change from white to dark purple-brown as they mature and produce spores. Its stipe (stem) can be long and slender, often becoming gelatinous or slimy in high humidity.

P. zapotecorum occurs naturally in areas with rich, moist soil and ample organic matter, especially in regions with high rainfall.

In recent years, P. zapotecorum has attracted attention from researchers interested in ethnobotanical significance.
